Basenji
Temperament:
Independent, Intelligent, Affectionate
Description:
The Basenji, often referred to as the “barkless dog,” is a small to medium-sized breed with a sleek, fine coat and an alert demeanor. Originating from Central Africa, they were originally bred for hunting and are one of the oldest dog breeds. Despite their inability to produce a typical barking sound, they are far from silent, making unique noises including yodels, whines, and growls. Basenjis are known for their intelligence, independence, and sometimes cat-like behaviors, such as self-grooming and a preference for high perches.
Care:
Basenjis are relatively low-maintenance in grooming due to their short coat and natural cleanliness. They require regular exercise to manage their energy levels and satisfy their curiosity. Mental stimulation is also important due to their high intelligence. Early socialization and training can help manage their independent streak.
Health:
This breed is generally healthy but can be prone to certain conditions like Fanconi syndrome (a kidney disorder), hip dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended to catch any issues early.

Fun Fact:
The Basenji’s distinctive feature of being “barkless” is due to the unique shape of their larynx. However, they are capable of making a variety of sounds, the most famous of which is a joyous yodel known as a “baroo,” especially when they are happy or excited.
